WHAT IS THE FSU CIVIL RIGHTS INSTITUTE

  • Under the leadership of Director Ted T. Ellis, the Civil Rights Institute is a driving force for equity, education, and social progress at Florida State University
  • It connects students and the community to the history and legacy of the Civil Rights Movement while advancing modern conversations around justice, opportunity, and wellbeing, including equitable access to healthcare
  • The Institute's work reflects Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s belief that healthcare equity is a moral imperative and a cornerstone of human dignity
  • Through programs, learning trips, research, and civic engagement, the Institute empowers individuals to become informed advocates and community leaders

Standing where courage changed the course of history, the Integration Statue honors FSU’s first African American students, Maxwell Courtney, the first Black graduate, and Doby and Fred Flowers, trailblazers in campus life.

Representing “Books, Bats, and Beauty” the statute reminds us that unity is built through knowledge, perseverance, and grace, as we continue together.
